Design and Graphics

As you’ll see in our Fortnite game review, the graphics within Fortnite really has evolved over the course of several updates since its original release in 2017 from Epic Games. The graphics bring players into a virtual cartoon themed world where the entire map is interactive with various biomes. These biomes have individual themes and names that often feature houses and towns that possess loot chests for players to find in the popular battle royale mode.

The graphics for this title are right in their own ways, especially since the game is not intended to look super realistic but rather allow players to perceive the fact that the fantasy world that they are playing within really exists. The PC version of the game has the best graphics quality, while consoles and mobile devices trail to allow the frame rate to remain acceptable.

Main Characters

As we discovered in our Fortnite game review, character and costume selection is perhaps one of the most impressive things about Fortnite’s gameplay design. Players can equip their very own skins and costumes that can be used in Battle Royale, and there a number of free skin selections for players without the battle pass. The battle pass allows players to possess more skins and unlocks challenges that can unlock even more skins and costumes. Every season the game receives updates that add new themes, costumes, and gameplay content that adds a fresh new look to the game, and adds to the content that players can utilize for their custom player.

There are thousands of skins and costumes with varying themes that can be equipped for each battle royale match. Every day new skins are featured that can be purchased with the in-game currency known as V-Bucks. There is no doubt that character selection and skin customization is one of the strongest gameplay design elements that Fortnite’s developers have successfully managed to place in front of their player base.

Storyline and Gameplay

While the Fortnite battle royale mode doesn’t really have a main storyline, there are events and special occasions that take place over the course of a season that presents the timeline for certain things to happen. For example, as shown in our Fortnite game review, during season four of Fortnite’s battle royale mode, the map would slightly change over time as an asteroid appeared to get closer and closer to the surface of the map.

Finally, at the end of the season, the asteroid finally impacted the surface, which drastically changed certain portions of the map. This is the kind of storyline that Epic Games has presented in Fortnite’s battle royale mode. While it isn’t the traditional type of single-player story, it has its own charm to it that allows battle royale to be as fun and successful as it has been.

With the evolution of battle royale continuing into future seasons of gaming, players will surely have the opportunity to experience many more miniature storylines that develop over the course of each upcoming season.

As far as the gameplay goes, players start each match on the ‘battle bus’ that flies high above the map and allows players to skydive into the map to find weapons, loot, and other items that can help them win the match. After short periods of time, the Fortnite storm closes in from the outside of the map until all players meet and the final player or team wins the battle royale match.

Additional Versions

As we discovered in our Fortnite game review, Fortnite originally released on the modern gaming console generation, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as well as the PC and Mac. More recently, mobile devices have been added to allow support for Android and iOS. Nintendo Switch also supports a version of Fortnite that players can enjoy.

Each version of the game has it’s own positives and negatives, but most gamers will agree that the optimal Fortnite experience exists on either gaming consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One, or on a personal computer or Mac device. This doesn’t mean that mobile devices take away from the experience, but players are far more likely to enjoy all aspects of Fortnite on a gaming console or computer.

Final Thoughts

It is hard to argue with the fact that Fortnite is the fastest growing and perhaps the most popular free game available on the new generation of consoles. Epic Games has made their online game available to as many players as possible and provided them with community-driven updates to spark the incredible growth that has now become their premier battle royale mode.

There are few signs to suggest that Fortnite is slowing down any time soon. Every now and again a game gets so popular that it changes the gaming industry forever. In all seriousness, Fortnite has likely impacted the gaming industry with it’s incredible and rapid growth and shown other game developers the potential pathway forward to online gaming success.
