Your Mission

Monument Valley 2 tasks you, the player, with guiding Ro and her child through mazes. These mazes include elements of optical illusions and seemingly impossibly oriented objects that are bewildering to look at. By tapping the screen, the player can move Ro and her child, or manipulate the layout of the level in order to clear a path for the characters to pass through. A wide variety of interesting gameplay and design elements, as further mentioned in the rest of this Monument Valley 2 review, make the journey of completing each level a true joy.

Design and Graphics

The visual elements of Monument Valley 2 are perhaps some of the most detailed and striking graphics of any mobile game. A unique blend of top-down and isometric views shows the entirety of the level at once, with winding paths and visually delightful elements. As mother and daughter become separated in each level, the color palette slowly fades to a muted grey, mirroring the shift in gameplay and providing a nice touch.

The art direction of this game is superb. Combining a beautiful watercolor palette with sharp and precise geometry, each level is a unique, intricate masterpiece that is as fun to look at as it is to play. Rivaling many PC and console games, Monument Valley 2 hits a home run when it comes to providing a graphically rich backdrop.

Level design complements the art direction very well. One of the most alluring aspects of Monument Valley 2 is the winding, twisting levels that the player is given to navigate. The developers have outdone themselves by providing mazes and obstacle courses that are challenging and extremely rewarding to navigate. The bends and corners of each level and also available to interact with by the player, adding another layer of intrigue and interest to an already astounding level design.

The soundtrack of Monument Valley 2 perfectly complements the level design and graphics. The graphic design of Monument Valley 2 is minimalist and only provides as much as needed, while still providing a complex and detailed environment. In much the same way, the soundtrack is not overwhelming, and gives exactly enough to partner with the visuals of the game to give a satisfying experience.

Main Characters

Within Monument Valley 2, the only characters are Ro, and her child. This slightly lonely world serves to emphasize the importance of the two main characters to each other, and helps remind the player of the importance of their mission–to assist these two lonely characters by getting them to the end of each level.

As previously stated, the main objective of the player is to help Ro and her child navigate through each level. Set in the same universe of Monument Valley 1, Monument Valley 2 delicately and deftly tells the story of Ro and her child, as together they set out upon an exciting and beautiful journey of discovery and friendship. As Ro teaches her child about the mysteries of the valley, players will witness the changes taking place in the world, as well as the changes taking place in the characters.

The parent-child relationship between Ro and her child is developed and explored in a touching way that gives the player an emotional bond to the characters, and makes the player want to see them succeed. The breathtaking landscapes and beautiful soundtrack provide an excellent backdrop as Ro and her child explore a new world. Ro is depicted as a tall, motherly figure wearing a red cloak, and her child is seen as smaller, more vulnerable, also wearing a red cloak, with a hood. As with many of the game elements mentioned within this Monument Valley 2 review, the visual interplay between the two characters reminds the player of their relationship and serves the purpose of the game very well.
